RE: Nato Strikes Are Necessary [April 1999]

Hidden Agenda
I'm just wondering whether Anthony Marciano ever took into consideration the possibility of the American government having a hidden agenda in Kosovo. If human rights is the only issue then why were the warnings about the genocide in Rwanda ignored only a couple of years ago? And what about America's human rights violations? They may pale in comparison to some other countries, but I don't see why America should have a double standard like this.

Columnist Response
In response, I would like to point out that on the issue of human rights, the United States stands up very well against the rest of the world. Our legal system provides more protections for accused individuals than nearly any other nation. As for the genocide in Rwanda, we did not have the same type of interest in Rwanda as we do in Kosovo. We are the leading member of an alliance (NATO) whose mission is to promote peace and stability in Europe. As a result, we also have a greater military presence that is sufficiently proximate to Kosovo that we are in a position to try to stop the slaughter. This was not the case in Rwanda.

I do not know how one could say that the United States may have a "hidden agenda" in the Balkans. We have no economic interest in Kosovo, we do not import oil (or anything else that I am aware of) from them, and the Kosovars are not a major buyer of U.S. exports. Regardless of the validity of our reasons for the air strikes, I don't believe that there is any evidence that the United States is acting in pursuit of any agenda other than that of protecting the Kosovar Albanians from genocide.

RE: Small Print

Size Does Matter
Congratulations on receiving a daily pick from Yahoo.

It looks like you have a nice concept, but - with all due respect - the 10 pixel Times Roman font on your navigation column is virtually impossible to read in 800x600 screen resolution. It's a shame that you put so much work into it only to end up with an un-readable product. All the same, good luck.

RE: Lord Stanley's Cup Is Under Attack [April 1999]

Share the Wealth
I agree. The Detroit Red Wings are becoming the New York Yankees of the NHL. In society the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. In sports the rich win and the poor don't have a chance in hell.

Work Relief
I found your site through the Yahoo picks subscription. We have since linked our "sunny-side up" Intranet page to some of your humor articles. Many staff (users) have commented how much they enjoy it and how it picks up their day.

Keep up the great work and have a Grade A Day!

SHORT TAKES
Nice story line, keep up the good work...Talk about a coup getting picked as one of Yahoo's daily top 5!...The new issue looks good...I have to say that your cover designs are very professional and much better than most of the design work on the Net. I think they help to make the whole publication look more professional.
